A salon owner has indicated she can do this for a family member and save them having to pay thousands of dollars to go to school for a year. She was told she'd have to buy her books (3), study, work for her during training and as she progressed, she'd be given a certain percentage pay, of her work after she puts in 300 hours of training and work up to more as she becomes a licensed beautician. She had planned to attend beauty school, but it's so very expensive. She'll also have a job at this salon upon completion and will take a test required from the state. Any info would be appreciated. This is the state of Missouri. Can you get certified to be a hair stylist without school?
Yes in each state you have to a certain number of school credit hours. then you have to take a state written and practical exam pass them both and then you get your license. unfortunately everyone has to go through the schooling to get certified even if they already know how to do hair. Bit it can be very helpful. For you to be an apprentice you usually need to have at least 900 or 1000 credit hours. go to the state bored of cosmetic arts web site for Missouri for all the information you need. you can also call them. Good luck. Hope I helped. Please add me to your contacts and email me w/ any hair questions you have via yahoo answers. Can you get certified to be a hair stylist without school?

im thinking you have to go to school. but you can get financial aid to help pay for it. i live in missouri and i htink the best school in missouri is new image school of cosmetology. it is in branson, mo.
I am a salon owner and test administrator in Houston, Texas. According to Texas laws you can only be a license beautician with the proper schooling from a certified cosmetology school. I know this is also true for California and Florida. I would think this would be true in all the other states.
The State Board of Missouri can give you a specific answer because every state is self governed. I know that there are several states that allow for state certified, satellite schools based in state certified teaching salons. Colorado for instance allows this, or at least did several year ago. Even if this is allowed legally under Missouri law I would not do this personally. If the student has any issue with the salon, her education is done. I can also say that from 14 years of experience that teachers at beauty schools are not usually up on the latest technology from products companies, innovative coloring and cutting techniques or even current trends. That would lead be to believe that the salon that they own would also be outdated with it's procedures. Perhaps this place in particular is the exception to that, but I doubt it. While school is usually $8,000-$10,000 they have student loans and a few hardship grants available to qualified students.
