Are there any online resources for finding a decent hair stylist in your area?

I would love to find a good hair stylist in my area but there seems like there are 1000's! It would be nice to find a message board where people could comment on their experiences at local salons. Are there any online resources for finding a decent hair stylist in your area?
I'm not sure of any, but ULTA and Toni Guy have nationwide salons and offer great results. Are there any online resources for finding a decent hair stylist in your area?
Go to invisionfree.com and look through some of the forums on hair or makeup. Also, magazines like Lucky sometimes talk about the best salons in your area.

That would be a great idea, having a message board and comments, but you have to remember that it's only someone's opion. I might think that I'm the greatest stylist, which I do think I am, but someone eles might think not. Also, I might give you a great cut today, see you in 4 weeks, and might be having a off day that day. It happens.
You can try going to different chain salon websites and seeing what kind of feedback they have. But it is just an opinion. Best bet is to call different salons and if you have the time set up a consultation with a stylist, that way you can see what kind of environment the salon has, what products they use, price ranges and if you click with the stylist, that way you just don't go into a salon as a walk in and get someone who is going to just do what they want.

How much to tip a hair stylist for a haircut?

how much do you tip a hairstylist who works out of their home, not at a salon? How much to tip a hair stylist for a haircut?
I would tip them 1-5 dollars... whatever is comfartable with youHow much to tip a hair stylist for a haircut?
i probably wouldnt. she's making up the prices. although she might have expenses, she doesnt have overhead. they dont pay rent on a building, they dont have to pay employees, extra insurance. it's mostly profit anyway.
The same as what you tip someone at the salon, or more if you personally know them.
i usually leave a five dollar tip, even if the people are out of there home they're still doing the same thing.

Can i get My Israeli license legalized in US, or do i need to go to school and take license exam again? Do i need a SS #? What can i do, do i have options?I have a cosmetics hair stylist license from isreal what can i do now that i live in ny?
You will probably have to take 400 hours and take State-board test again. For your licence It`s better than 9months of school.:o( I would go to your local beauty collage for more information. They should be able to help you.GOOD LUCK!

How to ask a hair stylist?

Ok so i really want my hair like brookelle bones but how will i be able to describe it to a hair stylist? Or is it just better to bring a picture? How to ask a hair stylist?
I would describe it as 'scene' hair, extremely layered, choppy and teased. I would suggest bringing a picture though, so she knows exactly how you would like your hair to be.How to ask a hair stylist?
her hair is fantastic, yo (:

hehe.

okay, well, i think you should bring in a picture.

BUT, you can tell her you want MAJOR layers all through your hair, starting from the crown of your head.

(where your ears are)

PS to the girl that answered before me:

saying you want ';scene'; hair wont work with everyone, because not everyone knows what that means!
I just want to say that I love her hair! Okay, sorry about that. When I got my haircut, I wanted it in a bob like Selena Gomez, so I brought in a picture and that totally gave her an idea. So I think that's work :)
Yeah her hair is gorgeous, just bring in a picture, for a discription:

- Scene style

- Choppy layers

- Teased

Hair stylist not highlighting hair to the roots?

I have been using foil highlights on my hair for 9 years. I recently moved and for the past 6 months my hair stylist has left at least 1/2 inch to almost an inch of my roots showing when I come in for foil highlights. Often times I feel like I need to be touched up the day after. I do not understand why she would do this considering I have never had this problem with other stylists. Also, I have noticed more of a visible line and it looks so tacky. I have been going in every 4-5 weeks and by then my hair looks horrible. In the past, I could wait at least 7 to 8 weeks. I want to believe that there is some reason out there for this, but I am afraid she is doing this so that I will come in more frequently. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Hair stylist not highlighting hair to the roots?
Well the reason for the lack of highlighting to the scalp may just be that she is not comfortable highlighting and thinks she may bleed onto your scalp ( when you get too close and make straight lines). The visible line could be from her taking too thick of a section or a straight ( called slicing) section instead of weaving a fine section. Or from her not blending to color up instead applying to thick where she starts. Have you told her your concerns? If you have and she has not been able to fix them, move on to a new stylist. We all want people to be happy with their hair and you want to be happy as well. So sometimes it is best if clients make sure to find their match. I hope this helped you some. I have been doing hair for 7 years.Hair stylist not highlighting hair to the roots?
Im a hairdresser and the only reason she is doing this, is because she doesnt know how to foil hair..You have to go to the root, and she is probably afraid her bleach is going to spill out..When doing foils, you cant load up on bleach because when it goes under the dyer it expands and will cause leakage and cause unwanted blotches..Consistency in mixing is the key, and application without loads of product..Make sure, the next time to find someone who is experienced, and goes to the root..Retouches if done right, need to be retouched about every 6 to 8 weeks...The foils should look neatly folded, and flat when all done..If its bunched up, then the stylists, hasnt had much experience...Go to someone who has, and dont waste your money, on the person who is doing your hair now.
She is probably concerned about something called ';bleed through';. Chemicals like what she is using on your hair to lighten it, swell when they warm up. The closer they get to your scalp, the warmer they get and more swelling can occur. Some of the more inexperienced stylists will end up giving their clients ';leopard spots'; on their hair if the lightening product swells and bleeds through the top of the foil, touching the rest of the hair.

You said that you moved...are you making the drive to the same stylist you had before you moved? If so, I have no explanation as to why she's doing this. If you changed stylists, I would guess you just happened upon someone who is less experienced and concerned about bleed through. It may be time to shop around for a new stylist.

is that true? What do you think they meant by that. and how come we(some) ppl know hairstyle go out of style.I heard from 2 different hair stylist. that hair styles never really go out style?
well as long as u can pull off the hairstyle and make it look good, then its not out of style. If u can make it stylish then its still ';IN';. As long as u like it and it looks good then thts all tht matters.

Why does my hair stylist enjoy making me look pretty yet talk about me behind my back?

?Why does my hair stylist enjoy making me look pretty yet talk about me behind my back?
because she's a b*tch that enjoys her job. i guess giving you pretty hair doesn't stop her from having things to say about you, so why ruin your hair when you'll pay her to do what she enjoys as she talks sh*t about you?Why does my hair stylist enjoy making me look pretty yet talk about me behind my back?
Could be a number of reasons...

she could be really shallow, with a genuine ';disloyalty'; factor in her personality.

    She is definitely unprofessional.

She could be jealous of you.

She may be giving you discounts to make herself feel better about the way she back stabs you.

    I'd find a new hairdresser.

I refuse to do business with people like that.
If you like the work and the price, who cares if they talk about you?

Obviously you don't care enough, or you'd stop going to her haha =o)
Because hair is his job and gossiping is his personality
He gets paid to make you look good.

    Reminds me of a joke:

A breeder of dogs crossed pit bulls with poodles.

    They are terrible guard dogs

    But vicious gossips
because theyre paid to make your hair look good... they enjoy the money, not you

EDIT: she gives you discounts so you keep coming back and keep paying them

Your hair stylist is a women right?

What percentage should you tip a hair stylist?

A minimum of 15% - because that's the minimum they have to report on their taxes. 20% if they do a superb job and you're really happy with them. What percentage should you tip a hair stylist?
it depends on the work done... but 20% is the usualWhat percentage should you tip a hair stylist?
No matter what I get done to my hair I tip 5 to 10 dollars. My services usually don't go over 60 dollars.
depends how good they did on your hair
15% and nothing if they butchered your hair.
Same percentage as any other service (lowest being 10%). The better the job, the higher the percentage.
Depends on how much money you spent.

    20% for a little

    15% for a lot

    10% for a helluva lot

Could any hair stylist out there tell me if bangs really can make a person look younger?

I turned 40 this past July, I am thinking of getting bangs again with the hopes it may give me a younger appreanace! Right now my hair is cut into long layers and is halfway down my back. I take the decision very serious as I know once it is cut bangs take quit a while to grow back. I am just looking for some proffessional experience out there for there opion. Thank you so much for your time!Could any hair stylist out there tell me if bangs really can make a person look younger?
Sorry I'm not a hairsylist. But I know alot, so I'll try to help. I have a roundish face, and I got straight accross bangs, and they made me look young. [considering I'm still in my teens, not such a good thing] But at your age, they may be good on you. My favorite bangs are long [cheek-length] sideswept. They are pretty on just about everyone! You could also just try hair generators to get an idea of how they may look. Try,

definitely-especiallly if you have wrinkles on your forehead. even a side bang-which is more ';in'; for the younger crowds right now. i would go with a side bang-that way you wont look like a little kid-and you can have them or swipe them to the side.

Does it really work if i give a picture to a hair stylist?

Will she give me that hairstyle by knowing it or just by looking at the picture the whole way through?Does it really work if i give a picture to a hair stylist?
I've done this many, many times. Almost everytime I get my hair cut I bring a photo.

Always keep in mind that it will depend on the person cutting your hair. They have to understand you. If you're looking for something trendy and hip, it's probably safe to say that you should stay away from the hairstylists who have 80s hair styles themselves...you get what I'm saying?

If you go and just explain it to them, they just have your words to go off of. But if you explain it to them AND you have a photo, it may make more sense to your hairstylist what you're going for.

For the most part, you are always right, but also don't expect your hairstylist to be a miracle worker. For example if you have coarse hair that is thick, you can't expect her to make your hair cut look EXACTLY like Reese Witherspoon's hair which is very fine and straight. Keep in mind that how YOU style your hair will make the difference as well.

But overall, yes, you can bring a photo into a hairstylist that you trust and are comfortable with and it should help them to gather what you want.Does it really work if i give a picture to a hair stylist?
depends on who does your hair
well i gave a picture multiple times to my stylist and she got it perfect everytime while making it personalized.

can you answer my question since i answered yours?

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;鈥?/a>
if shes good she will know exactly what to do!!
yes.... they're professionals! That's a lot of what they learn in cosmetology school. Think.... they get a whole living off of this... they won't screw it up. they really just have to study it a little at the beginnning, then they can easily picture it on you like there's a dotted line telling them where to go.
Pictures are our worst nightmare. Your hair may be too curly, too straight, too thick or thick. an assortment of pictures are much better. Then a stylist can choose what will work or modify two pictures together. Make sure you both agree on the style before you begin. Oh, and find someone good and that usually means someone who is not the cheapest yet not the most expensive. When you get into top priced work it is usually due to location and not the actual work. Same goes for chain salons. They will hire someone straight out of school and out of seasoned stylists as well! Good luck!
    if she is a good hair stylist then she should be able to tell how it was done by looking at the picture, if not, find a new hair stylist %26gt;.%26lt;
if u give a picture to the hairstylist, it will give them a better idea of what you want. It won't be exact from the picture, but it will be close.

I wanted to know which is the best salon or hair stylist to go to for a hair cut in the D.C area ?

RIdiculously straight and fine hair not to mention I'm losing handfuls from washing it with hard water.I wanted to know which is the best salon or hair stylist to go to for a hair cut in the D.C area ?
I used to go to a lovely salon very near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 2nd St., SE. (Near the Capitol South Metro station, on the south side of the street, next to the burrito place).

There are two in the area, but the better one (and less expensive) is on the street level. Seems like I used to get shampoo, cut, blow dry for between thirty and forty bucks three years ago.I wanted to know which is the best salon or hair stylist to go to for a hair cut in the D.C area ?
Try looking online and see what salons carry top of the line products. Matrix, Bed Head, Paul Mitchell, Redken, etc. Then make an appointment for a consultation. Ask if they charge. It doesn't mean they are any better if they charge. Also, ask for a stylist who is good with your type of hair. Most are good with any type, but sometimes if they have the same type of hair and you like their hair, chances are they will do good on your hair. See if you like the person and if not then keep looking. Do this well before you need a cut. It may take you awhile to find someone.

How much does a hair stylist charge for a photoshoot?

So, i don;t know how much it usually runs..can someone let me know? So, i won't be undercharging or overcharging....thanks!How much does a hair stylist charge for a photoshoot?
It will probably be an hourly rate. On average, a great hairdresser can make $200 or more per hour. So, this is a pretty good starting point.

Check Craigslist.org, sometimes they are listed for hire, there. You could use these listings for make up artists and hairdressers as a guideline. How much does a hair stylist charge for a photoshoot?
most stylists charge per look not for a shoot. but look at their prices for weddings, it should be somewhat similar....
It varies from person to person, depending on how much in-demand the hairdresser is, what city the shoot is in (it will be more expensive in cities like L.A. or N.Y.) If the shoot is for celebrities, you will charge a bit more. But, honestly, if it will be an entire day, you need to replace the income you would have had on a full day. The same would be true for a half-day, if you will be returning to work.

As the previous answer explained, a hair stylist's average salary can really vary from week to week. Plus, a more experienced hair stylist will probably earn more than someone just starting out, and salaries for self-employed stylists may also be different than for those working at a salon.

How do you tell a hair stylist that they have done a horrible job politely?

I went to Super Cuts to get a hair cut and the stylist butchered my hair. I wasn't sure how to tell her that it looked horrible and that I wanted her to fix it. All I could do was tell her that ';Yeah, it looks great!'; I didn't mean it but I didn't want to hurt her feelings. All I could think was I just want her to stop touching my hair so I could get out of there before it got even worse.

How do you politely tell someone they did a horrible job and to fix it?How do you tell a hair stylist that they have done a horrible job politely?
You say in a calm voice this is not what I wanted, not what you described and I want someone to fix it-now.

You are walking around with butchered hair but are still concerned about her feelings? I bet you tipped too didn't you?

Have another beautician from the salon fix it for you-and tip only then.

Do not ever just not pay but if they really botch a job-you need to let the management know. How do you tell a hair stylist that they have done a horrible job politely?
You don't. Don't just sit there and let them make it worse, ask them to stop the cut, and do the consultation again. Take a picture in with you the next time. A lot of the time, the hairstylists that you will find at Super Cuts and other chains are new stylists right out of school. They might not get what you are trying to tell them about the style right away. But, most stylists are visual, so a picture will help a lot. You don't have to be rude, just let the stylist know that you think that there was a miscommunication problem the last time.
u should juz say .. ';im sorrie but i just dont think this hair cut is wat its supposed to be or meets my expectations plz redo mah hair ..'; show tat yur mad a little .. jux to get her to knoe how u feel about it
    ';This isn't exactly what I wanted.';
    Just say. ';Thank you for your time. But I really don't dig this. Do you think you could touch it up a little?';

What is the best college to go to if you are wanting to become a hair stylist?

i love to style and cut hair. i already do mine, my sisters, and my mothersWhat is the best college to go to if you are wanting to become a hair stylist?
It depends on where you live. Paul Mitchell is a fantastic school, but you can go through your local community college to get the degree too, that's really cheap. Whatever you do, avoid any Elite schools, the have like 20 lawsuits against them. What is the best college to go to if you are wanting to become a hair stylist?
Well, I'm not really sure where you live (not asking for it either, that's not my business nor anyone else's), but I'm sure that there may be a community college nearby...perhaps, again I am not really sure. Pretty much any college has a hairstyling course (I hear it's really fun too).

  • What if I let a white hair stylist do my hair?

Well I'm Black. And My hair is nappy and thick. It is so hard to comb. I had perm, I hate perm... I haven't had perm since last year April.

Even if I get the best best best hair stylist in the world... why can't he or she do my hair? Are beauty school teaching White beauticians how to do African American's hair? What if I let a white hair stylist do my hair?
Hmmm, you might be better off learning how to take care of your own hair. Many people, black and white, don't know how to handle natural hair in general. Believe me, blacks have just as many misconceptions about natural hair as any other race and they can ***** up your hair. You'll be walking out of the salon with thinner hair because they've raked a fine tooth (very small) comb through it when it was dry. Or, pressed it using too much heat and gave you heat damaged, which causes parts of your hair to remain permanently straight. Or, cutting off a lot of hair when they were only supposed to trim it. If you go to a salon then I'd probably try to find a natural hair care salon, or make sure the hair dresser is experienced with handling natural hair. When they begin to treat your hair as if it were straight then that's a good sign that they don't know what they are doing.

Your hair isn't easy to get a comb through like straight hair - this is for ANYONE with curly hair. Curly hair tangles and takes patience to untangle. Many beauticians do not have the time to patiently detangle your hair properly and give it the TLC it needs. You can only count on yourself to treat your hair the way it should be treated. I have never went to a salon since I got my hair cut to go natural, and I don't plan on. I do my own deep conditioning treatments, and washing, conditioning, and styling. The only time I will go to a salon is when I want to get my hair dyed, and when I do that then it wouldn't matter what ethnicity the hairstylist is as long as s/he know how to properly color and handle curly hair. BTW, there are also salons that specialize in curly hair, if you can find one in your area.

Sadly, beauty schools, IMO, don't teach white or black students how to properly take care of black hair, period. Unfortunately, some schools teach about black hair based on myths and not facts. For instance, one woman on a message board said her beauty school professor told her that conditioner cannot be left on the hair overnight or the hair will fall out - FLAT OUT LIE. Or, how some professors teach their students that the hair should be greased before it's flat ironed - CAN YOU SAY FRYING HAIR! That's why I do my own hair, because many blacks know nothing about natural hair or how to properly handle it or take care of it. Not to mention I've heard of a black beautician who told a girl that she could never go back to her natural hair....doesn't make sense, does it? Or, the beauticians who tell people that dirt makes the hair grow - ANOTHER FLAT OUT LIE. Or, how tight braids pulls the hair out of the scalp so it can get longer - NO, IT CAUSES BREAKAGE AND SCALP DAMAGE! Just because someone is black or a licensed beautician does not mean they know about relaxed hair, natural hair, or hair care in general.

BTW, there are many white hairstylists who know how to handle black hair and know how to apply relaxers and even know that relaxers are not good for the hair....If you go to a hairstylist (any race) then make sure they know how to handle your hair type.

http://www.nappturality.comWhat if I let a white hair stylist do my hair?
Beauty schools vary very widely in what they teach and in the techniques they expose their students to. Just because a stylist went to a school, doesn't mean he/she know what to do with every hair type.

I'd be very careful going to a white stylist. Check whether there are other black patrons first of all and see the results. Do the tools and products in that salon look familiar to you? Does the advice the stylist gives demonstrate an understanding of your hair?

I'd ask those before handing over my hair.
No, i wouldnt let a white hair stylist do my hair if i was black. Just becuase i know that we are of different ethnic cultures and our hair is different. If you want your hair to turn out good, go to a black hairstylist. She will know how to work you hair, cut it, and make it look beautiful!

    Hope this helps, good luck!

How much $ is appropriate when tipping a hair stylist?

For example, I went and had foil highlights done the other day. It cost me $129. I tipped her $10, was that too little, too much or just right? How much $ is appropriate when tipping a hair stylist?
$10 is pretty cheap for a tip. I usually tip 20%.How much $ is appropriate when tipping a hair stylist?
Always go with 20% or higher. 10 was to little they will think they did a bad job when you tip them so little. And the next time if they won't put so much effort into your hair. No matter where your going 20% is always appriciated and what you should tip.
When I get my hair cut, I usually tip 20$ no matter how much the cut cost unless it cost less than 60$, then I tip 10$ or 15$.

Are you a hair stylist - excluding tips, how much do you make an hour? Where do you work?

are you a hair stylist - excluding tips, how much do you make an hour? What city do you work in? And how long did it take you to become one? and are you happy with your profession?

Thanks!!Are you a hair stylist - excluding tips, how much do you make an hour? Where do you work?
    yes. in new york.

8.50 an hour + commission rates+ retail (product sales) on all services. ex, 1 hair cut i get a % on the service, plus the 8.50 an hour, and more if i made tip. the more people i do the more money so i control my income. and if i don't have anyone i still get 8.50 per hour. so 600$ a minimum paycheck. but it all depends on the place you work. you can rent a chair and pay rent, and take in how ever much you profit, you're your own boss. or you can work at a place like me, or you can work at a place where its all commission and tips, or some places where its just a flat salary, its almost ran like a restaurant. and yes like what i do. if you are in it for the money it will be made, the harder you work and the longer you do it the better you get the more you will make. also depending on the area you are working (high volume areas make more and charge more like a big city). but you have to have motivation and an interest. you you are looking for a job just for cash you wont go very far. you have to be into it to make it, it is a competitive world. it takes 8months- 1year or longer depending on the school and program and state. its 1000 hours for new york, and thats the lowest amount needed for your license. and you need to have specific state licenses to work in a specific state. ex, i can't take my new york license to Florida. i would have to switch and go for more hours. and after you complete your 1000 hours, you have to pass a written exam and a State Board practical exam. but beauty school is first! make sure you're dedicated and motivated and you'll do great! Are you a hair stylist - excluding tips, how much do you make an hour? Where do you work?
    Nope!
no but you should make at least minium wage
I don't know the exact money , but they make really good money. My friends mom is one and she makes about 18 an hour. But she works as a professional professional. anyways.. don't worry about money you should pick a job that you are happy with .. after all your stuck with it.

btw ( her mom had enough money to go on a abercrombie shopping spree) hope it works =]!

Should I go back to my a professional hair stylist to recolor my hair or just do it myself?

a year ago, i had someone put blonde streaks with my black hair, after 5 months I didn't feel like spending to retouch my hair so i decided to color my hair brown. Im thinking of dying my hair again to a lighter brown or red but I don't know if its good to do so. Do u think its okay for me to color my hair again over the other colors or should i go to the salon to get it fixed. Thnks.Should I go back to my a professional hair stylist to recolor my hair or just do it myself?
I would say that anytime you lighten your hair, get it done professionally. Especially if you have dark hair, because then it requires a double process to bleach the hair and then dye it the new color. If you do it yourself you run the risk of ending up with a weird color or even ruining your hair.

Sure loads of people do it and it comes out fine... But I hear so many horror stories of DIY hair dying... I'd say play it safe!Should I go back to my a professional hair stylist to recolor my hair or just do it myself?
i think letting a professional do it would be in your best interest. trust me. they know what they are doing and will use the proper products and techniques. haha i had light brown highlights i got tired of and tried to dye my hair back black on my own and the brown parts had a green tint. not cute lol :)
One option is going to a cosmotology school its a lot cheaper and they know what they are doing, home hair coloring can cause a lot of drama especially depending on what shade you pick etc.
Personally, I would go to a salon. I tried to fix my hair once and it was a real mess in the end :( Sometimes it is just better to pay the money...
I would go to a professional colorist at a salon. I have known some people whose hair gets fried and turns a weird color when they did it themselves.

  • How much should I tip my hair stylist for a $10 haircut that takes about 15 minutes?

well.... 10 percent... is a dollar

    but thats cheap...

i saw 3 or 5 dollarsHow much should I tip my hair stylist for a $10 haircut that takes about 15 minutes?
that sounds more like a barber, than a stylist with those prices. Two or three dollars sounds fair. You are saving a lot on the price so I'd make sure a buy that person a nice gift for their birthday or Christmas. How much should I tip my hair stylist for a $10 haircut that takes about 15 minutes?
Same as a waiter 15% more or less if there good.
Generally, you would tip like you would at a restaurant which is anywhere from 15-20%. Since it's only $10 for the cut, and unless they do an absolutely horrible job, I would give $2. Tipping just $1 seems cheap since they are performing a relatively skilled function. If it's someone you go to regularly and have a good relationship with, you could go for up to $5 if you feel like it.
depends, if it is a barber i would say 3 or more. if its a cosmetologist i would say 5 bc 15 min for a haircut is rly fast unless they jack up ur hair. %26amp; 10 dollars for a haircut is way cheap.

How do i tell a hair-stylist to do this kind of coloring?

    http://www.wwe.com/superstars/raw/melina鈥?/a>

there's a photo if you want to look at more go down and its the 1st 3 you see down there....just click and it will enlarge it...

So my mom and i are going to talk to a hair-stylist and i don't really know how to explain the look...i want it to look quite similar to that look...

But i don't know the colors to tell her....

    Soo What Do I Say?

(and yes...i love wrestling and i want the hair of my favorite Diva...Melina)How do i tell a hair-stylist to do this kind of coloring?
They're called peek a boo highlights.

All you ask her to do is put them underneath the top layers of your hair.

The higher she puts them the more they'll peek through. Meaning if she puts them on the bottom you can only see them on the bottom but if you ask her to put them like a little above your ear but underneath those layers they'll peek through like Melina's.

BUT...I think those are extensions. because keeping up with that color is alot of work because they fade fast and bleed.

well good luck girly = )How do i tell a hair-stylist to do this kind of coloring?
Print out the picture and show it to your hairstylist.
take them the pic that what my clients do !!
Those are pink extensions. They sell extensions like hers that just bobbypin into your hair, they're really easy to use.
you would just say i want it light on the top and dark on the bottom.. if you bring the hair stylist a pic then it will be pretty easy for her to match the pic.

    it's really cute.
By the looks of it they just look like normal strip highlights that were mixed to the rest of the hair on the top when it was being washed. But make sure to bring in a picture whenever possible so the stylist will REALLY get a feel of what it should be like.
    Just take the picture in...

that way you can feel confident that your stylist knows what you want and your stylist will feel confident knowing that's exactly what you want!

What should I tell the hair stylist to do?

I want to cut my hair like Amanda Bynes in Sydney White. You know, the way how her hair is all layerly like and when she puts it in a pony tail, there's still hair that falls down. How should I tell the hair lady to do it? Layers? I've tried but the lady just cut it in regular layers that goes throughout your hair and is nothing like hers.

ThanksWhat should I tell the hair stylist to do?
bring in a couple of pictures! :)

  • Can anyone recommend a good hair stylist in San Francisco, CA?

I had the same hair style all my life. My hair is long to the waist, black and wavy. I really need to make a change. Cost is not an issue as long as the hair stylist is GREAT.Can anyone recommend a good hair stylist in San Francisco, CA?
I don't know of one in San Francisco but I do know a real great one in Palo Alto. The place is called Mission 6 hair salon. They were even on KRON 4 morning news and have a good buzz about them going:

    www.mission6salon.com

I don't know if you are willing to go out there but they are great. I found out about them on the internet and found a lot of great reviews. I searched them on Citysearch.com (San Francisco), and found a lot of reviews. I checked it out and got a great cut. It costs about $50 for a mens haircut. However, I don't know how much a womans cut costs.

I highly recommend this place! Don't worry about them trying to push you to buy products because they don't push you to buy anything. I usually get my haircut by Brenda, however, expect to schedule a couple of weeks in advance because they are that busy.

I am a self employed hair stylist in NC. I've been doing my taxes myself but recently had CPA Tax guy help.

He told me that he could save me $3000 per year if I become a LLC? It would cost me bet $600 to $800 a year to pay him to administer this.

Has anyone else done this? I would love to hear from hair stylist or other people who are self employed.

Thank you!I am a self employed hair stylist in NC. I've been doing my taxes myself but recently had CPA Tax guy help.
I'd ask him to explain how that will save you money. That doesn't sound right to me. Forming an LLC is done to shield your personal assets (home, bank accounts, investments, cars, etc.) from liability for what your business does. It won't save you anything in taxes and depending upon how it is set up can actually cost you more in taxes and filing fees than a sole proprietorship will.

Ask him to explain in detail how this is going to save you money. Personally I think he's blowing smoke, possibly to drive up his billings. That's unethical if that's the case.I am a self employed hair stylist in NC. I've been doing my taxes myself but recently had CPA Tax guy help.
    TFTP

If you are a single owner, the IRS is going to tax the LLC exactly the same as your sole proprietorship. You will still file Schedule C and pay SS and Medicare self-employment taxes. Obviously, that doesn't save you on your federal income taxes, and may cause you to pay higher state taxes.

If he is suggesting you incorporate, that may result in lower taxes depending on your other income and how you finance equipment purchases.

So, you need specific information on how it would save you money. Have him show you last year's tax return re-done with you as an LLC.
I think you need to ask him for more details. Off the top of my head, I cannot see how it is possible. However, I do not know all of your particular details. The same benefits are available you as a self employed person as a LLC. Incorporation could probably benefit you but that will depend on income and what fringes you can set up.

Is it fun being a hair stylist? Or would it be fun to you?

I was just wondering if it is fun to be a hair stylist or to do people's hair for them. What is it like? Is it fun getting to meet new people and socialize all day? Is it fun to make people look and feel good about themselves? I was just asking because one of my friends is going to be a hair stylist at an upscale salon so I was just wondering. Is it fun being a hair stylist? Or would it be fun to you?
Its fun when you don't have someone in your chair that is on the rag or hasn't showered in over a week. Trendier salons bring in more attractive people of course. If you can make it through beauty college and the first business building years then you can pick and chose where you work and who you have as clients. You just have to pray that someone doesn't walk in with jet black hair asking if you can make them look like Tori Spelling. That is sometimes a let down when you have to explain the cost and how long its gonna take. It has its ups and downs. Good luck.Is it fun being a hair stylist? Or would it be fun to you?
Well it depends if you have an achieving goal and the talent.

You wont have any problem finding someone. I would suggest that you put an ad on Craig's list with the dates and time you will be in S.F. If your looking for a independent make-up artist. If quality is that important to you, why don't you set up a consultation and ask for her advice on what she recommends, also tell her what you want done as well. If you go into Bloomingdale's in S.F. the majority of those girls do outstanding work. Try Channel or Yves Saint Laurent, they do great make-up and some even take the time to do your hair. Just let them know ahead of time. Usually, they just want you to buy a minimum of 2 products. I would suggest lipstick and gloss, because that will wear off the first. Good Luck!

first you will have to have a consultation to make sure that is what you really want to do. they will generally then apply the bleach to your hair midstrand to ends only and allow to partially process, then they will go back and apply the bleach to your roots (hair closer to the scalp processes faster). you will then sit possibly under a dryer depending on how long it is taking your hair to lift. then comes rinsing, shampooing, towel drying. most likely your color will need to be toned with a violet toner to remove brassiness that will have to process. rinse shampoo conditioner. i then recommend a trim to remove damaged ends and then blow dry and style. all of this will take a good amount of time. i would say around 2 hours depending on how long your hair takes to process. hope this helps!!!! good luck!!!

Can someone recommend some makeup artist and hair stylist for a bride for a wedding in San Francisco, CA?

I'm looking for someone with experience doing makeup for Asian brides and someone with a portfoilo I can see their work online. ThanksCan someone recommend some makeup artist and hair stylist for a bride for a wedding in San Francisco, CA?
For the makeup artist i would suggest trying to get someone from MAC. You can't see any work online but if you go to a store like Nordstroms that has a MAC counter and talk to them i sure they could do something for you. Im pretty sure that they will have a book of styles and they could even do something else. I think it is $40 to get your makeup done but you get it back in product. They might have you come earlier than the wedding to do a practice to see what it is going to look like. if you bring a picture of the dress, it would give them a better idea of what they could do.

if you want to get the hairdresser and makeup artist from the same place, you could always try Doschas. I know they have wedding packages. They are also pretty good. They are amazing at hair and im sure just as good as doing make up.

  • How do i explain this to my hair stylist?

okayy... so i am getting my hair cut and i want some more layers.. i have a few. but i want more.. i want something like miley cyrus or ashley tisdales when they are straight..

*** btw.. i don't want to be just like miley or ashley i just want a similar hair cut!

    thanks sooo much

xoxoxo! How do i explain this to my hair stylist?
I am a hair stylist in training and I understood you perfectly but just in case I would bring in a picture so the stylist has a better idea on what you're looking for.How do i explain this to my hair stylist?
find a picture that resembles the look that you want, print it out. And give it to your hair stylist. They can do it the way you want from the picture. They will give you some advice if needed for the style you want. Not all hairstyles turn out the way you want them depending on how thick or thin your hair is. ect.
Actually, they probably cut their hair in close layers.

But they insert extensions in their hair so that when straightened it comes out like so.

I have a question about tipping a hair stylist?

My wife just got her hair cut by a stylist and she paid 60 dollars, then she tipped her 10. Its been a week and she is unhappy with her hair. She called and they will re-cut it at no charge. They said it's included in the price. Does she have to re-tip her? If so, how much.I have a question about tipping a hair stylist?
I think it would be kind of polite. Maybe another ten dollar tip just for good measure.I have a question about tipping a hair stylist?
Thanks, uhm.. paying thirteen dollars for a haircut? That's probably what the proffessional scissors cost. SHH.

No, she doesn't have to re tip her! They should give a full refund including the tip if the cut can't be fixed------------and I can't believe anyone would pay $60.00 for a haircut! We only charged $13.00 for a haircut. You could get a perm or color and a haircut plus a style for $60.00!
although i dont think another tip is needed, however if your wife wants to she could tip a lesser amount. Maybe 5 dollars? but to be honest the lady is just fixing the misstake she made in the first place and if the hair stylest would have done the cut right the first time then there would be no need to return to have it fixed!

TO THE GIRL ABOVE ME ^^^^^^^^

13 dollar hair cuts usually are the ones you STAY CLEAR OF. i paid over 150 for a trim and color. you get what you pay for ( however in this case maybe the lady was new or just having an off day)

lol 13 dollar hair cuts..thats funny. My boyfriends haircuts cost more than that.
depends you only tip if your happy with the style she shouldn't have tipped the first women but if she likes it the second time then yeah but not as much you give a couple dollars
I don't think you should tip her! She gets enough money.
No, I don't think your wife should have to tip her again. She tipped the stylist the first time. If the stylist is going to fix it to your wife's satisfaction, no tip necessary.
NO absolutly not! In fact she should not have tipped in the first place if she was not satisfied with her cut.
I was in the same situation not too long ago. When I went back for the second cut I did tip the stylist because I was very satsfied with the result. Remeber, tips are just that, a bonus given to the stylist when a customer is happy with the result, it's no different than tipping at a resturant. If you're not happy, don't tip....if you are, go for it
I do think she should re-tip her especially if she is getting cut, wash, and styled. I do not think she/he should tip more than 15% the second time around. I would recommend 5-10%.
ur not supposed to even tip unless u got a money tree in ur back yard

How do i ask the hair stylist to cut my hair?

i want my hair to look like this... http://menshair.about.com/od/picturegalleries/ig/Curly-Styles/curly05.htm

so how do i ask for it?How do i ask the hair stylist to cut my hair?
Print out the picture and take it to your hairstylist. How do i ask the hair stylist to cut my hair?
ok first whoever that guy is, he is HOT!!!!!!!!!!! anyways if you want the hair to be like that your hair has to be kinda wavy/curly like the guy, and well you can see the guy has some layers the best thing would be to bring the hair stylist the pic and tell him you want it like that! good luck!
Bring in the picture. If you have the same hair type it should be pretty simple. I love it when clients bring a picture. It's so much better than them trying to describe something in hairstylist lingo.
Simply ask for choppy uneven layers begining at 1 1/2 inches. Then just point at the length you want (:
    Depends on your hair.

Print the picture out and ask if they can do something similar.

HAIR STYLIST!Can u please tell me what the BEST straightens are in your oppion from top 2 bottom?

    Its just more prefered.

Like the least good, and then the med, and then the best.HAIR STYLIST!Can u please tell me what the BEST straightens are in your oppion from top 2 bottom?
Well, in my opinion it has to be GHDs. Even my mobile hairdresser bought a pair after using mine.

The worst I have ever had have to be a pair of Vidal Sasson metal ones, I might as well have tried straightening my hair with a pair of cooking tongs.HAIR STYLIST!Can u please tell me what the BEST straightens are in your oppion from top 2 bottom?
I've never used a Chi, but I heard they work wonders for some people, but just average for others, so I'd say that one's medium. My Remmington Wet 2 Straight works really well, except it doesn't keep my hair straight for too long, but that's because it's naturally curly so nothing works too well for me. I personally don't like Vidal Sassoon because I feel like it doesn't straighten it well. Consider asking your stylist to get a chemical straightening. I'd recommend with any straightener, buy some damage protection spray so it doesn't fry your hair. I'd also recommend buying straightening products like Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight. Hope I helped! :)
    Well.

I have a few opinions for you.

    Do NOT use

FHI. Especially the pink one from target lol.

Trust me, that thing dried up my hair.

I suggest the Sedu, Solia, or GHD (even though that's really expensive).

I have never tried the Chi, but I have heard that damages your hair badly too.
    i have a Chi!

    THEY ARE AMAZING!!!

    (but VERY pricey)

really any GREAT hair strightener you are going to get WILL be pricey.

i would ask your hairstylist though to get one for you. they can sometimes knock a little off the price.

    ALSO great:

    Sedu

    GHD

    hope i helped!!!
i loved my bed head one , but i used my friends CHI and it made my hair soooooo soft and shiny , so CHI!!!

The stylist does not have to black but I want someone who can handle ';black hair'; care and knows their products. Hi. Visit http://www.squidoo.com/black-hair-salon to find a stylist in your area.

To my nubian queen hair stylist can you tell me a little bit about how to care for synthetic hair as dos dont?

Second are there any salons for our hair in the area of West Flamingo /Decatur?To my nubian queen hair stylist can you tell me a little bit about how to care for synthetic hair as dos dont?
Don't go cheap when buying the hair. (Be aware that just becuase it says 100% human hair doesn't mean it is. Most mix synthetic hair. You can tell by burning the tips or getting it wet. It shouldn't smell pasticky when burned and it should get wavy when wet.)

    1. The type of hair is MOST important. When I would get weaves, whether or not it would still look good by 2 months (not stiff, etc) depended on the brand I got. I wish I could give you specific brands but I've forgotten. :) Just trial and error I guess. One curly weave I got could have been reused after 3 months and others pooped out after a few weeks and looked like I had a dead cat on my head. Get your hair from a reputable hair shop and don't go cheap.

    2. The texture of the weave is important too. Whether you get straight, wavy, curly or kinky weave will change how you treat it. Generally for curlier textures I find you need to put some mousse in regularly. Products in general are good for weaves to weigh them down and hold the style. I mostly got straight weaves becuase curlier ones tangled easier and they frizzed quicker and after that there was no way to renew them. But remember: brand of hair is more important than texture. The best one I ever had was a curly weave. It was gorgeous even after 3 long months of travel, swimming in the Bahamas and amusement parks. I was visiting a friend so I didn't even take care of it. Amazing!

    3. If it's good (human) hair you should be able to apply heat to it, so when it starts getting skanky looking straighten it/roll it/use curling iron depending on the look you are going for.

    4. Shampooing it. I would make the mistake of not taking care of my hair underneath. Not good. Stinky and moldy. If you swim, go in the rain, or shower MAKE SURE your hair is dry as well. May need a blow dryer to get to the roots becuase cornrows can take days to dry on their own and you don't want to sleep on wet hair. Also moisturize your scalp. An easier way is dry shampoo or go back the salon for a wash. But my advice? Avoid washing on your own. Perfect way to get tangles and never go to sleep on wet weave for another reason. I once had to cut a knot out of my weave that way. Once weave locks there's no way that tangle is coming out.

    5. Once the weave starts moving around on your head the jig is up. lol To avoid an early removal make sure your hair stylist is sewing in as tight as possible. It might hurt for a little bit but the style will hold longer.

    6. Once it's down to the wire and you want to get one more day out of a weave you can do something. I found this out after about 10 weaves. lol I never even thought to cut the weave. But you can and making a long 14'; weave into a cute bob is great way to renew it. Also brushing is key and detangling every day. And braid hair at night rather than sleep loose and sleep in satin cap.

    7. I've never gotten a kinky weave becuase I just assumed the tangles would have been horrendous. But you should try it. The texture is probably much more forgiving than straighter weaves that begin to show their age quite quickly but just be prepared for constant detangling. Plus if the hair is good quality you can always straighten it for a different look.

    8. The way your weave is put in is important as well. I don't know if you are doing sew ins but whatever the method I recommend a style that can show a part. Weaves with no parts look really bad and fake. Just be aware of your hair covering the tracks. Nothing gives a weave away quicker than tracks showing. Also make sure if you are getting a straight weave your own hair is relaxed and short. Straight weave shows bumps more than a curlier weave.

    9. Also try cornrows the the front and a curly weave in the back. Easier style to maintain, lasts longer, no tracks showing, gives scalp some exposure, and you use less hair.

    Like this: http://www.expoupdate.com/KaraSaun.jpg

    10. And finally I know what it's like to have a weave look and feel like a bird's nest. Toward the end hats, scarves, hair pins, bands, etc are your FRIEND! If it looks so bad that you just want it gone, Do it. Don't keep a fugly weave in. One of the best things I ever did was remove a weave myself becuase I think it was starting to meow. lol Better no weave than one that bad.

    Good luck

PS. Off topic, be careful of getting sew in weaves constantly. After getting a weave one after the other for 2 years I noticed my hairline was thinning. Cornrows are hell on hair after a while. Just give hair some time to breathe between weaves. This helps becuase a healthy base is best for weaveTo my nubian queen hair stylist can you tell me a little bit about how to care for synthetic hair as dos dont?
One thing you CAN NOT absolutely do, is put heat to it. It will BURN UP! Hate to say it , but it will. Now what you want to DO is, keep it oiled or add some kind of shine to it because that type of hair tends to become dry and brittle and it looks ugly and you'll look a mess. These are the best tips that I can give you. Actually I believe they're the only ones, because it's not much that you can do with synthetic hair.
    ?

African American women or hair stylist, how do I make my weave ponytail blend with my hair?

I am African American and I know that I have the right color weave but in order for the texture to match, i don't think I should gel my real hair. What it I pressed out my edges to blend, will that work. If not, what can do to make it look softer like the weave?African American women or hair stylist, how do I make my weave ponytail blend with my hair?
Most definately you would have to get a touch up or a perm.(either one) After getting this done, you should use Jam. Its a lot better than GEL, but its softer and makes your hair more manageable unlike Gel which leaves your hair brittle. But you have to JAM your whole hair even in the back and then the top so that you can blend both of them in together. But you have to try to match your hair color if you dont it wont really work, then you should throw some DOO GRO on it because it makes your hair have a more better shine. Try it and it will work.African American women or hair stylist, how do I make my weave ponytail blend with my hair?
buy a different texture of weave.if u cant figure out how to get ur hair as smooth or silky as the weave, because its going to show.then thats not the texture of weave u want. there r ones out there that look like regular str8 but not silky smooth hair

How should i tell the hair stylist?

I have shoulder length thick some what layered hair i miss my long hair, so now i wear extensions, however it looks really fake you can see my real hair hanging out and my hair is sooo thick compared to my extensions. I've been suggested to get my short hair layered. i'm afraid that they're gonna cut more of my hair. How should i tell them? How should i tell the hair stylist?
The best way is to find a picture in a Hairstyle magazine and show the stylist that way they know exactly and specifically tell them how long or short you want what area using a specific measurement like 1 inch or show with your fingers..How should i tell the hair stylist?
They are giving you the service, dont be afraid just tell them directly what you want, the more details the better for them and the more communication you have the better the results. Just be forward.
tell them you wanrt to add layers to your hair but you want to keep the full length of the bottom layer

and stress the fact that you dont want it cut

however trimming your hair often will make it grow faster
tell them to keep the bottom layer full length? simple

    If anyone have any information

please say so...........How to become a international hair stylist?
    Join an agency.

In order to do so, you will need to have a first rate book, have published work, done fashion shows and if you are good then you should'nt have any trouble been taken on by an agent, so get working on your portfolio.

You need to get your work published, so if you know of anyone that works on shoots/magazines/ads etc ask if you can assit them (even if you have you lots of experience this will be the best way to get noticed). Then if you are good people will start booking you but you must get to a agency first because people will be reluctant to use you without one.

Get a copy of Le Book which is a Directory of artists and sources for visual industry professionals.

That will have all the agencies for makeup agents, hair agents, stylists, photographers, etc listed. Most are based in New York, LA, London, Paris, Milan, etc to youshould be prepared to travel to fulfil your dreams.

Can someone please tell me how and how much is a barber / hair stylist get paid?

Thank you.Can someone please tell me how and how much is a barber / hair stylist get paid?
Hi,I'm a retired Cosmetologist. To answer your question I would need to know if you're speaking about booth rental,or if you are paying or getting a %.I live in California now,and the cost of space/booth rental is outrageous. Also the cost of services are outrageous, without the quality being improved. So for me I'm going to have to say, it depends on where you're at,and the cost of services. For my salon,I charged $75.00 a week for rental. And for those just starting out and were trying to build a clientele,I went 70/30.As soon as they had clientele, they went to rental, with a rental agreement that they were responsible for they're own taxes. If you are in an upper class area where you can charge top dollar for services, stylists have no problem Paying $75.00 a wk. rent. However in my rental agreement, my stylist were to attend regular classes to make sure they were up to date on the latest cuts, trends, etc. You want your shop to be a place where people don't mind paying for top quality services. All it takes is one stylist, that's always late, doesn't show up,looks messy,or doesn't give top quality service,to bring your salon down.Give an excellent service, give the customer your undivided attention, and always be on time, and you won't ever have to worry about customers leaving. Hope that helps.Good luck and God blessCan someone please tell me how and how much is a barber / hair stylist get paid?
I used to work at a bank. The owner of a salon and one of her stylists both made deposits. The owner brought in deposits weekly between $250 and $450, depending on the season, time of year, proms, holidays, etc. She also got payments from the stylists that ';rented'; out their space in her building that totalled around $160-$200 a week. The stylist that banked with us would bring in $80 deposits sometimes and other times she would bring in $400. It varied a great deal throughout the year.
ok well there is a couple different methods.

if you are on comission, where you're an employee of the salon, it varies... but usually 50/50 to 60/40 precent of your weekly income, and most places give you 10% on retail sales...

and if you're booth renting, where you're considered self employed, you make 100% of your weekly income, however you must remember that 30% of your annual income you have to pay taxes on..... but you can lessen your amount you have to pay in with buisness expences aka write-offs....

now your income depends on your clintele.... ive been behind the chair 4 years so my average is 75K+ it starts off slow but you have to build yourself a client list... ex, market yourself with flyers, run an ad in your local paper and always have buisness cards onhand... good luck!
YES I AM A HAIRDRESSERS I GET PAID COMMISSION I GET 60 % SO IF YOU PAY 100.00 I GET 60.00 PLUS TIP BUT ALL SALONS ARE DIFFERENT SOME GET PAID SALARY OTHERS GET BY THE HOUR IT JUST DEPENDS WHO YOU WORK FOR AND YOUR EXPERIENCE
    About 35-40K per year...

If you work in Beverly Hills, NYC or Miami or a high end salon it's probably more like 60-70K.

Passes/gift cards to spas are great gifts. Manicure passes are the most inexpensive usually and are great for anybody who works alot with their hands.

Also, movie passes are a good idea as well. As are versatile house items, like festive corkscrews, festive decoration, some festive plant, etc.

    some good products are:

    -jioco k-pak reconstrustor

    -redken extreme

    -tresmme (protecting line)

-aussie 3 minute miracle (i think its called that)

also anything you could do is go to your hairdresser and get protein treatments done. It will make your hair so much stronger and healthier. Also try dying your hair to its natural color. Leave it alone, dont dye it, dont straighten/curl it. Maybe go to your hairdresser and get a nice treatment put through it, or buy a treatment from the local shops. Also there are special shampoos and conditoners for dry/damaged hair :)Hair stylist says my hair is really damaged and dry due to coloring. What can I use to repair?
Start getting a trim every month or two, and have them take an inch or more each time...just to start getting the damage off. Then use a moisturizing/strengthening shampoo + conditioner,....Aveeno is a good one and also try their leave in conditioner...Im using it, and its made a huge difference....My husband even likes it....and they do advertise that it helps repair the hair.*

A very informative website, kindly stay a minute in website and check
A deep conditioner and a trim...Ask your hairstylist on what a good repairing shampoo is. And leave your hair alone. Don't put any heat or chemicals on your hair.
You should consider using dry/damaged shampoo and conditioner ? xx
Stop coloring it! Leave your hair alone and you won't destroy it.
Scissors - the only solution is to cut it off.

Do I have to tip the hair stylist if I am not happy with my hair?

I asked for golden highlights, and they came out white blonde. She toned it down, and then it looked orange-y! Do I have to tip if I was very upset with my hair?Do I have to tip the hair stylist if I am not happy with my hair?
You should NEVER leave the salon unhappy. If she messed it up she needs to fix it for free on the spot, then you can tip her if she is kind and helpful about it. Too many people just say whatever and leave. If your hair is not exactly what you want it to be, stay until it is.Do I have to tip the hair stylist if I am not happy with my hair?
I agree with Amber Marie. Don't ever leave the salon unhappy. She should fix it and then if she does you should tip her for the extra time and effort spent.
You don't HAVE to tip ANYBODY for ANYTHING. It's your choice.
no-way if its not what you want dont tip them try a different salon if your not happy

Whats the average pay for being a hair stylist?

I want to become a hair stylist and Im just trying to look at all my options and find out more information about cosmotology.. what is the average pay?Whats the average pay for being a hair stylist?
i get paid $17 an hour but i also work at a really good salon. it also depends on if you rent a booth or not. because you can rent booths for a payment every month and you get to keep all your profit. its hard though!Whats the average pay for being a hair stylist?
if you're good you can do really well. i know people like that and they are able to charge hundreds of dollars just for a haircut or color. renting a booth or getting your own business can make you very successful. i know people who have only been working less than a year in the hairstyling industry and they're rolling in like 50,000 dollars on average. you can do very well!
It depends on where you live. I know in the city I live in it is like between 10-15 an hour. Also a normal haircut would cost 25 bucks. In a city one and a half hours away from me(bigger city) It costs over 100 to get a cut done so I imagine they make more there. Just ask around in your city/town.
depends what kind of a salon you work at and where you live. i work in a chain salon in PA and get paid minimum wage, $7.15/hr. so i really rely on tips. so make sure you tip your stylist good haha

What career advancements are availble for a Hair Stylist?

I want to become a hair stylist but i want to know what other opportunities there are out there. Thanks in advance!!What career advancements are availble for a Hair Stylist?
Owning your own salon!! How cool would that be?! :)What career advancements are availble for a Hair Stylist?
You can go places.....Try becoming a celebrity's ';personal';, ';private hairstylist for hire';... You'll travel a lot...or seek employment on the Movie , and TV film sets...that will get your foot into film Industry, and if you're good your services will be requested, privately....or, you can own your own beauty shop and train other stylist to represent your company for private hire.

Sometimes you have to create an opportunity on your own

    to work to your advantage.

How many professional, '; personal hairstylist for hire'; , have you ever heard of ??? Good luck !
When you go to school for hair you learn SO much you can do ALOT of things. You could be a platform artist, where you are on stage and do hair in front of others to show them how to do things, you could be a color specialist, or a specialist in other fields having to do with hair.....extentions etc....You could own, you could do runway or photo shoots. I know it may be a morbid, but you could do hair for funeral homes (do you have any idea how much money is in that?!) There are so many options. Call a local hair school and talk to the representative....they can tell you your options too!

  • Why do I need to tip my hair stylist when I've already paid for the service?

My job doesn't tip me for the work they pay me to do. Please don't say if you want her to do a good job I have to tip her. That's why I pay her.Why do I need to tip my hair stylist when I've already paid for the service?
hairdressers are on a poor wage most of the money goes to the owner so if you like this person who does your hair treat them, and next time they do your hair they'll do a even better job....Why do I need to tip my hair stylist when I've already paid for the service?
I am a stylist who works in a healthy hair concept salon and we get paid very little tring to give clients a low cost hair care service, so for me my tips that my clients give helps out alot especially during the week since we get paid weekly it really helps out with gas and lunch money for the week

You do not need to tip your stylist. It's a custom that some people observe and some don't. It has been my experience that people normally tip their stylist unless they are the owner of the salon because the stylists working for someone have to pay part of what they earn to the salon owner. I have worked in both situations and when you are working for someone and have to pay them part of what you earn, the tips really help because you do not have to share those with the salon owner. I owned a salon for over 5 years and some of my customers tipped and some didn't. It made no difference to me who tipped and who didn't. I always did a good job whether they tipped me or not. I would say that 90% of my customers did give me tips even though I owned the salon because they appreciated the time I took to make certain that they were happy with my work.
i agree. i haven actually heard of tipping ur hairdresser. tahts y u pay them
I don't understand what the point in tipping a hair stylist is either. I never tip my hair stylist and she always does a phenomenal job. They already charge me enough, I'm not going to pay extra money when I don't even HAVE to.
because most the money you already pay doesnt go towards her paycheck so it gives her more money than what she already makes
TBH i tip my hair stylist,

my hair stylist is realy cheap but does an amazing job and always knows exactly wat i want,

most of the money you pay your stylist actually pays for stuff like the tea and coffee or drinks you get whilest they are doing your hair (if they r nice like that) or the treatments like peroxides, dyes or even the rent of their shop.

i always tip mine becuase she does a wonderful job. its like a little kid getting praised for doing a good peice of work or a yr 10 getting praised for an amazing peice of coursework, if you dont show them you think they did an amazing job then how are they ever going to know? you dont NEED to tip your hair stylist but its common curtosey, like tipping the taxi driver or the pizza delivery man...

    Hope this helped:S

    Byes
Hairstylists are usually paid one of two ways (at least in my state, where there is no booth rental) One is hourly, which is generally slightly above or slightly below minimum wage. The second way is commission, which is a percentage of your wages brought in that week (the other half of the percentage that does not end up on a stylist's check goes to the owner, who uses it for business costs). For those states with booth rental, I believe the stylist keeps the entire cost, but is also expected to pay rent, and furnish their own supplies (including color, styling products, etc.) So in the end, many stylists really aren't making that much of a wage at all, just by providing the services. It's the tips that really help them to make a decent (or in many cases, slightly above fast food restaurants) wage. Now, some very high class salons don't expect you to personally hand over a tip; it is actually written as a mandatory charge already on your bill. And also keep in mind that stylists are generally expected to pay for their own shears, combs, hot tools, clippers, etc., as well as advanced education classes to keep up on the latest trends (and often, newer stylists are still paying off their school loans as well). In addition, stylists experience slow weeks and even months, in which their paycheck is below normal. So, in essence, a few dollars given to a stylist who did a good job on your hair is only a small sacrifice to you, but can make a big difference to the stylist by the end of the day.

Is there a way I can get a feel for a career as a hair stylist?

I might want to get a cosmetology license, but I want to know how I can get a feel for a career in cosmetology before I pay a TON of money for school.
