I am looking for a fun/funky clientele but I work in suburbia CT...How can I get the clientele I'm looking for without having to move?I am a hair stylist: How do I get more of the clientele I'm looking for without living in a big city?
I am hairstylist too...in Nebraska... and of course word of mouth but also do a big sale or discount ...advertise and give out cards everywhere you go!!! I do a client reward system ... have your clients take 3 of your cards and put a discount on each of them for incentive of the new clients that your gal is giving your cards to and when you get back that gals 3 cards she gts a discount its fun for her and gets her friends and family in who get their family and friends in and so on and so on make sure you know which clients cards are returning ... also when someone is in your chair sell that product girl!! one product is a 30% chance of client return 2 is 70% chance and 3 is a 90 % chance she or he will come back to you! Send out thank you cards to all your clients for their patronage they like that. And when they are in your chair sell service by discounting it right then and there, it works I'm telling you. My business is booming!I am a hair stylist: How do I get more of the clientele I'm looking for without living in a big city?
Connecticut is pretty conservative in many towns, however, I think for a funky look, you need to target younger customers. You can advertise in a local paper and offer a discount for first time clients. You may want to put a picture in the ad, or just describe the type of cuts, styles you specialize at. You can offer ';back to school'; specials. This could be on cuts, coloring, highlights. When you do a few satisfied clients, word of mouth goes a long way in the hairdressing field - as you probably know.
The old fashioned way: Word of mouth, flyers that display pictures of your hairdos, doorknockers, business cards, start up your own website, try to get other hairstylists together and host your own hair/fashion show like they do in big cities (ex: Bronner Bros. Convention in Atlanta) and of course, put together a photo album of your hairdos each time you do one and keep it with you at all times in case someone mentions they want their hair done, you can whip out your talent and let it speak for itself.
my cousins is a hair stylest to, and she does all our hair and we just tell other people about her and they go to her now, i would just tell ur family to tell people
advertise!! offer discounts and specials for events like Prom...teenage girls are like locusts when it comes to things like that
Try advertising yourself and your skills. Make some cheap flyers with coupons on them and walk the mall. Look for the people you want to become your regulars, and hand them a coupon/flyer and tell them a little about yourself! DONT BE SHY, it will show you are nervous.Remeber to dress the part...If you want a funky clientele dont wear a business suit!!
Where do you work out of: your home, do you rent a chair or at a salon?
I'm interested in going to beauty school myself... one of my friends who lives in Los Angeles says she has friends that use Craig's List to get odd jobs (including doing make up and hair for shows, movies, anything). Craig's List has really spread across the country so check out www.craigslist.com (I believe that's the site, if not just google Craig's List, that's what I did)... Hope that's helpful. Maybe even put an ad in the paper under ';Work wanted';?? Maybe you can get work on doing hair for weddings etc...?
You HAVE to put yourself out there.
I am just starting to build my clientel in my area as well and we are far from a BIG CITY!
I created a professional myspace account and started advertising myself there. http://www.myspace.com/live2cre8style
Then, it's word of mouth or get a personal bio together (it should consist of your business card, salon menu, and a sheet with a short biography of yourself- and if you dont have these, MAKE THEM) and then go to where your desired clientel would hangout, shop, eta, WHATEVER and pass them out!
Also, you could get a friend and do their hair at a discount (and they have to be willing to do what YOU want to do) and have them be your walking advertisement!
These are just a few suggestions that I have found to work for me :)
Good luck building your business!

Word of mouth is usually a fast and effective way of spreading any kind of news, and especially advice among women, so encourage all of your clients to tell their friends about you.
