In America, do you have to tip your barber or hair stylist?

Do employees in hair salons and barber shops work sloely on tips or do they get a base salary?





What if you're a guy and you're just getting a very basic (10-minute) hair cut, as opposed to a girl who's getting a perm that lasts for hours?





I want to leave a tip whenever it's customary, but sometimes I feel awkward giving a tip if it's not expected to do so.In America, do you have to tip your barber or hair stylist?
I get a reasonable base salary so I don't mind whether customers tip me or not. To me, the tip is just an expression of gratitude so it doesn't have to be large. Not necessarily 20%. Even just $1 is fine with me.In America, do you have to tip your barber or hair stylist?
It is proper to tip 20 percent, and it would be rude not to tip unless the haircut or service was horrible. The amount a stylist makes depends on whether they work for themselves or whether they are employed by the salon. In the first case, they are either the owner or they rent their space from a salon and they get all the money from the cut. In the second case, the stylist is an employee of the salon and gets a salary or hourly wage plus a commission from their services (could be anywhere from 10 percent up). In either case, it is appropriate to tip 20 percent (or more if you feel like it). The way I see it, a hairstylist is serving you the entire time you are there and worrying about how your hair looks, so they really deserve the tip. Not that a waiter doesn't, but they don't give the same type of personal attention. You can also tip the person who washes your hair ($5 or $10 is fine, not 20 percent).
It depends on what kind of salon/barber you go to. Some are based on salary and some beautician is based on tips! I always leave a very good tip...even for little snips for my hubby and son (anywhere between 30-50% sometimes)
